The Day Lady Died 121

satirical, scandalous and life-affirming elements in Davidson's poetry co-exist in a happy solution (42) that happy solution is readily evident in Post Hoc nothing in the desert is left over even the sand is an example. Equal parts philosophy and lyric, Davidson's poems make music of their own self-inspection between them difference forms on a slide like a chair made out of flesh in the phrase 'I'll think on it.' ( The Last Word on the Sign 1990 ). Not since Louis zukofsky has an American poet placed such lyric weight upon such a simple preposition Is the speaker on the chair, thinking, or is the speaker thinking of the chair Seldom has a final pronoun been so deliciously ambiguous, and yet it shows us how our language supports our every day. Bruce Campbell notes that there is a fine distinction between poetry (or art) and philosophy, but it is the kind of distinction which can be used (111). From Discovering Motion (1980) through Analogy of the Ion (1988), Davidson has made a...

San Francisco City Lights Books 1956

The 64-page booklet carried a two-page introduction by Williams, to whom Ginsberg had sent Howl and some of his other recent work in 1956 (Williams included parts of Ginsberg's accompanying letter in Paterson V in 1958). In the introduction, Williams's stroke-impaired memory confuses the first and second world wars when he writes of his own correspondence with the poet, but he praises Howl as a howl of defeat. Not defeat at all for he has gone through defeat as if it were an ordinary experience, a trivial experience. For Williams, Howl is the triumph of an affirmation of love coming out of defeat, the theme, he might have said, of his own long poem of the mid-1950s, Asphodel, that Greeny Flower.

Hart Crane and the logic of metaphor

Crane's magnum opus, the work on which he was to stake his final reputation as a poet, was clearly The Bridge. Before writing The Bridge, however, Crane had experimented twice before with longer forms. For the Marriage of Faustus and Helen (1922-23) is a poem in three parts, an attempt to update the Faust myth in a contemporary setting. Crane's use ofthe imagery of the modern city in a highly symbolic and intellectual poem - the poem's fusion of our time with the past, as he put it - was clearly indebted to Eliot, but the Romantic tendency to seek a transcendent reality beyond the chaos of the city departs from Eliot's more skeptically modernist vision. The figures of Faustus and Helen represent the artist and his quest for unchanging beauty the modern world is represented by stenographers, baseball scores, stock quotations, the subway, a jazz dance, and warplanes. The poem ends with an affirmation of both past and present, as the poet attains the height The imagination spans beyond...

The Twentieth Century American Long Poem

Two poets who returned to more traditional devices in their long poems were Hart Crane and W. H. Auden. Crane saw the affirmations of The Bridge (1930) as an answer to The Waste Land, and sought to move beyond the denotative functions of language through symbols, most centrally the evocative power of the Brooklyn Bridge itself the sweep of the poem, like that of the bridge, was to transcend its individual parts. Crane's poem is intended as itself a bridge, taking in American history and looking to the nation's future. Crane's achievement was hindered by his having to write the poem over a number of years, and by a decline in his health towards the end. Readers differ on the degree to which the poem's consequent unevenness compromises its unity. In another alternative to the fragmentary collages of the modernists, Auden used the resources of various literary genres in a number of long poems written after he took up residence in the United States in 1939, for example New Year Letter...

Paterson and Williams later poetry

Williams uses the flexibility of the form to his advantage, stretching his thought back across the page from the end of one three-line unit to the beginning of the next it is as if a sweet-scented flower were poised. The circling movement suggested by the use of the triadic feet establishes the thematic and symbolic motion of the poem as a whole, which moves through the recognition of the fact of death to an affirmation of the transcendent power oflove. 11 The asphodel itself is the flower of the dead, which in classical mythology covers the Elysian Fields. Since the flower was also familiar to Williams from his childhood in modern-day New Jersey, its use here represents the confluence of poetic tradition with his local world. 12 The flower links past and present, and its symbolic resonance moves between death and a rebirth through love and memory. Williams, who resisted overt symbolism throughout most of his career, now allows himself to indulge freely in the process of turning image...

New York Horace Liveright 1930

The second half of The Bridge takes up the discontinuities between the American past and present, and seeks ways to rediscover and reaffirm a unity. Walt Whitman is quoted in the epigram to the first section, Cape Hatteras, and is subsequently directly addressed. Whitman's transcendental vision and his affirmation of the power of the poem and poet to help achieve it make the earlier poet a central figure behind The Bridge. For Crane, the power of imagination represented by the poet must transform technological achievements - here symbolized by the Wright Brothers' discovery of flight in Kitty Hawk - into a force for progress rather than destruction.

Celia Singing Harke How My Celia

The writings of Margaret Cavendish afford a valuable record of the life of the aristocratic woman, an affirmation of the female's limited role in English life, and the ability of select individuals to overcome some of those limits. Despite Margaret's willingness to abide by the general hierarchy of male dominance, she achieved significant power within her specific domestic sphere. Granted free rein by her husband to use her time as she pleased, she suffered little under so-called social restraints. She represents one example of the inconsistencies in England's social order as she defied the social edict against writing and thinking women. Perhaps most importantly, Margaret Cavendish's prolific publishing career contributed to a significant change in the 17th century, a gradual shift from an allmale publishing world at the century's beginning to one that by the dawn of the 18th century was forced to include women.

Berssenbrugge Meimei 1947

The unpredictable, often disjunctive journey of sensuous, sensory thinking that Berssenbrugge's poetry embodies provides a trenchant criticism of the distortions of efforts at representation, as well as an affirmation of desires for lucid perceptions, intimate interchanges and, as Value (1993) has it, a moving frame that reframes the space for utopian content.

Queering the Canon

Cal performing of masculinity than a simple affirmation of male power. My own view is that the rise of the feminist movement following the publication of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique (1963) swiftly rendered the sexual politics of the Beats suspect, if not mastodontic, and that the only context in which they can still be read as libera-tional is that of gay rights.

Panegyric and Satire

In the works of all these writers, the rejection of elevated public poetry becomes in itself a political comment, a refusal to participate in the contemporary affirmation of the political status quo. This is made explicit in Swift's On Poetry a Rapsody, where he depicts a sharply divided literary culture within which it is the Whig poet who for Epicks claims the Bays while the Tory writes Elegiack Lays (ll. 95 6). The poets of the political establishment seem to have captured the genres of heroic poetry, while their opponents, perhaps nostalgically, turn to lyric verse. In Directions for a Birthday Song Swift lampoons public poetry by producing instructions to write a panegyric
