Sanchez attended Hunter College in New York, graduating in 1955 with a degree in political science, and then spent a year at New York University studying poetry with Louise Bogan. She is the author of more than 19 books, including poetry, plays, essays, children's books, and an anthology of poems written by one of the creative writing classes that she taught in Harlem. She has been married twice, to Albert Sanchez, and in 1968 to activist Etheridge Knight (with whom she had three children), both marriages ending in divorce.
