Zenodotus: of Ephesus, pupil of Philitas, whom he succeeded as tutor of the children of Ptolemy I Soter. Born c.325 bc, he came to Alexandria early and was appointed first head of the Alexandrian Library. He initiated the scientific study of the text of Homer, editing both the Iliad and the Odyssey, as well as other ancient works.

Aristarchus: of Samothrace, head of the Alexandrian Library from c. 153 bc. He was renowned as editor and commentator, dealing with Homer and many other ancient poets.
