San Francisco City Lights Books 1956

In 1986 Harper & Row published an edition of Howl annotated by the author. Many accompanying period photographs and reprinted contemporary documents provide a very useful history of the poem, its composition, and reception. Among the model texts that Ginsberg reprints as precursors to Howl in this edition are poems by Christopher Smart, Shelley, Hart Crane, and Williams. In 1994 Rhino Records issued an early, 1956, recording of Ginsberg reading Howl in San Francisco, which adds a dimension to the poem not to be missed.

Twentieth Century American Poetry and Other Arts

Stieglitz's journals Camera Work and 291 were forerunners of a number of journals that appeared around the years of the First World War and which emphasized the mix of the arts, with reproductions of paintings, photographs, and drawings alongside essays, stories, and poems. Sometimes photographs of machines were included in the mix, as in The Soil, which included in its pages photographs of steam engines, suggesting that such engineering feats, like the poems and prose it published, were all modern products of American skill and imagination. Alfred Kreymborg (1883-1966), little remembered for his poetry now, was an important bridge between the arts in New York. He knew many visual artists, started a journal promoting modern music, and was the contact for Ezra Pound to send over a sheaf of imagist poems from London for publication. Kreymborg's impressionistic autobiography, Troubadour (1925), is a valuable record of the iconoclastic atmosphere and creative ferment of the time. An even...

Situation And Action

Each use of this or that ('That woman This man . This other man') indicates the movement of the poet's attention from one person to another, as if he were inspecting their bodies one by one. Yet we should notice that, as is often the case, the context projected by the poem is vague and ambivalent Yeats need not be physically surveying his dead friends - he might be perusing their names listed in the newspaper, looking at their photographs, or simply recalling them in turn as figures in a mental portrait gallery. It is left to the reader to supply a more precise context, rather as it is often left to the reader to fill in the gaps between the verbal hints of a metaphor.

New York Norton 1978

Speaking for her group, Shatayev says that realizing such communal strength had always been something dreamed, and the idea of dream here, in the volume's title, and in other poems in the book acknowledges the ideal nature of the search, as well as the dangers of its confronting and challenging both the physical world and the time-bound conventions that have insisted upon shaping our understanding of that world. The next poem, Origins and History of Consciousness, which provides the volume's title, terms this search The drive to connect. The dream of a common language. Its history includes the photographs of dead heroines such as those of the first two poems.
